The Democratic Republic of the Congo is dealing with a major crisis of Homelessness due to the fighting that has occurred in the nation. The first Congo War alone left 2 million people homeless, and the second War in the DRC triggered the Great African War, the largest conflict between countries since World War II. 2.3 million people remained displaced from their homes in the DRC due to the excessive fighting. Thousands more have fled as refugees. The volatile security situation in many areas of the DRC means voluntary repatriation is not currently a viable solution for most refugees in the DRC. Opportunities for local integration in the host countries are also very limited.
Refugees do have an effect on the nation there. Refugee camps are sometimes built in areas that have been badly subjected to homelessness. In Africa, refugees are usually settled in semi-arid areas such as agriculturally marginal areas, or near national parks/forests. as in the case in Rwandese in Zaire. Refugee camps tend to be rather big, this camps tend to have a negative impact on the environment, Such as the Virunga National park, Zaria, the environmental impact from Refugees may be irreversible.
