Poverty is one of the main issues in the DRC because of all of the conflict and war that the nation has been through. Although it is extremely rich in resources such as copper, gold, diamonds, cobalt, uranium, coltan and oil, the DRC doesn't have enough money to extract these resources from the ground, making the DRC the poorest country in the world, when it could be one of the richest.
The previous publication of the world development report states that violence in the DRC, such as civil war is not just another simple cause of poverty but, it is becoming the main cause. Recently the cost of the DRC having a civil war has brought not only them down money wise, but other countries down by over $200 million. In-fact Zimbabwe spent $260m dollars towards the Great African War, which was triggered by the Second Congo War.
Civil war can cause businesses to lose customers, go bankrupt, lose money and force them to flee to other countries who are not part of the war. It’s simple, the reason poverty is caused by civil war is because it lets business down and it costs millions and millions of dollars to fund a large scale war.
